So you won't be surprised to learn that I was pretty much in disbelief while this was happening. I froze my sliced bananas, as instructed. I dumped them in the food processor and started whirring. And then it looked like this and I was thinking: this is never going to work in a million years.
But then, because this totally seems like A Thing according to everyone talking about it online, I persevered.
I kept pressing the button and the blade kept whirring and then something totally magical happened. It's like those bananas all of a sudden stopped being bananas and, well, they started being ice cream.
At this point, as the bananas were magically doing their magic, I added a large dollop of chocolate sauce (sorry, I don't do much measuring in my kitchen). And then, because I had cocoa powder in the pantry, I added a couple small spoonfuls of that too. Because making a chocolate-y thing even more chocolate-y is always a good idea.
Now, I was pretty giddy by this time. Because I started with frozen bananas. And I ended with silky smooth ICE CREAM. I'm totally serious. This has the consistency of soft-serve frozen yogurt. I still can't even believe it. Do you see how it actually LOOKS like ice cream? Well, it TASTES like ice cream, and it keeps for a few days in the freezer like ice cream, but it sure won't affect your waistline like ice cream.
Ok, I do need to clarify at this point that this wasn't really "chocolate ice cream." It was "chocolate banana ice cream." And I distinguish this because yes, it does taste somewhat like bananas. Which doesn't bother me a bit and I, quite frankly, can't get enough of it. But I know my husband won't touch this with a 10-foot pole (banana hater) (eye roll). And my cousin, who also doesn't like bananas, broke it to me gently last night that yes, she can taste the bananas and no, thank you, she's going to pass on a bowl. To which I said: More for me!
But don't let my clarification deter you. The consistency is uncanny. Soft-serve frozen yogurt, I tell you! With a lot of chocolate flavor and a hint of banana flavor!
I made this a second time and in addition to chocolate sauce and cocoa powder, I also added a hefty dollop of peanut butter. Holy. Cow. Can we say "Elvis ice cream"???? Chocolate AND peanut butter AND banana? Like I said: life-changing.
Other ideas that I have yet to try:
So let me know how it goes when you try this! Flavor combination suggestions welcome!
